Hauptmann
Hans-Joachim
MARSEILLES
Wartime Signed Hoffmann
Card

Hans-Joachim Marseilles was
considered by his fellow 'Experten' to be the greatest German Fighter pilot of
the Second World War. Beginning his career with LG2 during the Battle of
Britain, Marseilles finally came into his own in North Africa with JG27, where
he demonstrated his peerless skill at handling the Messerschmitt 109
fighter. Most German Aces preferred to use the Me109's climb and dive
capabilities but Marseilles perfected the art of slowly turning with enemy
fighters and hitting them with high angles of deflection shooting. Needless to
say, this took enormous amounts of skill and experience. Pilots who saw
Marseilles in action were simply lost for words at what he was able to achieve.
The 'Star of Africa' racked up an incredible 158 Victories - all of them against
Western opponents - the highest Luftwaffe Ace in the West. Awarded the Knights
Cross with Oak Leaves, swords and Diamonds, Marseilles continued to be an
inspiration to the hard-pressed German forces in Africa. On 30th September 1942
Marseilles was returning from a sortie in his Me109G-2/trop when smoke began to
fill the cockpit. Guided back towards his own lines by his wingmen, Marseilles
attempted to bail-out but struck the rear tailplane - he failed to deploy
his parachute and fell to his death in the open desert. Marseilles was buried in
the Heroes Cemetary in Derna - he was 22 years
old.

Oberst
Wolf-Dietrich WILKE
Wartime Signed Hoffmann
Card
"Furst" Wilke was
one of the leading personalities of the Luftwaffe. He originally served with the
'Condor Legion' in Spain before serving with JG53 during the battles for France
and Britain. He led III/JG53 during Operation Barbarossa before his
Unit was relocated to Sicily to aid in the attacks on Malta. In early May 1942
III/JG53 moved to North Africa but Wilke joined JG3 in Russia by the
end of that month, scoring his 100th Victory on 9th September for which he was
awarded the Oak Leaves to his Knights Cross. He participated in the brutal
struggle for Stalingrad and in the subsequent battle for the Kuban
bridgehead. In May 1943 JG3 was withdrawn to Germany and Wilke under
instructions not to fly sorties against the growing daylight attacks. Wilke
however could not stand by and so began flying successful missions against the
US formations. On 23rd March 1944, Wilke led JG3 into a US Bomber raid and scored
his 162nd, and last, victory - a P-51 fighter. Wilke was shot down and killed
shortly afterwards by other P-51 fighters, possibly of the 4th FG. "Furst" Wilke
was credited with 162 Victories in 732 Missions.

Hannes Trautloft is
indelibly linked with JG54 "Green Hearts", the Unit for which he is most famous.

France. During the battle of Britain he was made Kommodore of JG54, a position
he would hold for another 3 years. Serving in Russia he increased his total to
58 Victories. Trautloft was involved in the 'mutiny' of senior Pilots against
Goring and removed from Office. Hannes Trautloft rejoined the post war
Luftwaffe. He passed away in January 1995.
