This superb release by Robert Taylor back in 2005 celebrated the 60th Anniversary of the end of the War in Europe and Robert decided to portray the P-51D Mustangs of the celebrated 357th Fighter Group in this Edition.

The 'Mighty 8th' Air Force had come a long way since commencing operations against Germany many years earlier and it had been a hard and difficult road. Losses had been high and the issue of protecting the B-17's and B-24 Bombers from Luftwaffe attacks had centred around developing a fighter that could not only escort the Bombers all the way to targets deep in Germany, but also take on the Me109's and Fw190's once there. The answer came in the form of the magnificent North American P-51 'Mustang'. From the moment that the P-51B's entered service with US Fighter Groups the tide began to turn in favour of the Allies.

Powered by a Packard built Merlin engine, the P-51 possessed the range and performance to defeat the Luftwaffe. By 1945 the Mustangs, along with other Allied fighters, had achieved that long desired feat - Air Superiority - and one of the greatest exponents of the Mustang were the 357th FG.

Robert Taylor depicts the P-51D's of the 357th FG sweeping down the Rhine valley completely unopposed in April 1945. The war in Europe has literally weeks to run.
