ARDENNES OFFENSIVE - Original Oil by Nicolas Trudgian
Nicolas Trudgian painted 'Ardennes Offensive' back in 2001 and it was published by the Military Gallery as a Limited Edition Print signed by veterans of that most famous of Battles.
The attack in the Ardennes was Hitler's last great gamble for a decisive breakthrough in the West against the Allies. Reserves of men, artillery and tanks were carefully built up in the hope that, with the element of total surprise, the offensive would punch through the Allies and allow German forces to push as far as the port of Antwerp and possibly capture valuable Allied supplies, especially fuel. The Offensive caught the Allies by surprise but US Forces proved to be stubborn defenders and the Germans, who had initially attacked under a blanket of heavy clouds and snow, now found themselves vulnerable to Allied air power as the skies cleared. The 'Battle of the Bulge' was to be the last great battle in the West and the US Army's costliest - over 80,000 casualties.
Among the Panzers used were a small number of King Tiger heavy tanks that were issued to some of the SS Panzer Units in the spearhead of the German attack.
Nicolas Trudgian's impressive scene shows the King Tigers advancing over a snow-covered landscape being covered by the Fw190A's of JG1. In the distance an Me262 jet is conducting a recce patrol ahead of the advancing armour.
