The pilots of VMF-121 had already earned undying fame for their defence of Guadalcanal flying the tough, pugnacious F4F Wildcat. In April 1942 VMF-121 took delivery of the new F4U Corsair just in time for the tough battles through the Solomon Islands. New Georgia, Bougainville and Rendova soon became familiar battle grounds.

Nick's fabulous scene shows the 30th June 1943 where the Corsairs of VMF-121 are providing close air support to the US landing off Rendova. The Japanese have reacted with a massive air assault that is promarily Mitsubishi G4M 'Betty' bombers - escorted by 'Zero' fighters - as they attempt to wreak havoc among the US Naval vessels. The Corsairs of VMF-121 have taken on the Japanese at tree-top height and a 'Betty' has been fatally hit - one of 19 Japanese planes shot down by 'Marine 121'. All in all the Japanese will lose 58 aircraft - and in vain - the US landings are successful.
