BIRTH OF A LEGEND By Robert Taylor
The third - and last - of the Hartmann Trilogy that Robert produced at the turn of the Millenium, 'Birth of a Legend' depicts the great Ace Eric Hartmann's first victory - it was also nearly his last! On 5 November 1942 Hartmann's schwarm spotted an elechon of IL-2 fighter-bombers and escorts at very low level. Diving to attack, Hartmann's first pass was ineffective - his second however was delivered at close range, with the result that his own Me109G was showered with debris from the doomed IL-2.
At low altitude Hartmann bellied his Me109 into a field with a massive shower of dust - the Stormovitch diving into the ground a few miles away. Taken back to his airfield by car, Hartmann was now on his way to an unsurpassable score of 352 Kills.
