CAUGHT ON THE SURFACE By Robert Taylor - The VC Edition
One of Robert's most sought-after releases 'Caught on the Surface' was published back in 2000 and paid tribute to the bravery of both combatants in the war for control of the Ocean.
On 30 July 1943 in the Bay of Biscay three German supply U-boats were heading out to re-provision U-boat Wolfpacks in the Atlantic. It was the task of the aircraft of Coastal Command to intercept and sink these raiders. Fresh orders from Admiral Donitz stated that, if attacked, the U-Baots were to remain on the surface and fight it out with their anti-aircraft batteries.
On this day a Sunderland flying boat from 461 Squadron RAAF spotted the U-Boats and decided to attack - the pilot Flight Lt Dudley Marrows bringing his huge Sunderland down to wave top height makes a daring run on the nearest U-Boat. In an ironic twist the Sunderland - Coded 'U' (from 461 Squadron) was now attacking his numerical namesake - U-461 - a Type XIV Tanker.
Robert's amazing painting shows the Sunderland barely clearing the U-Boats conning tower as he straddles the U-461 with depth charges, ripping her open. When climbing away he saw survivors in the water and dropped a dinghy which saved their lives.
