Published back in 1992 this is a unique release by Robert Taylor featuring the Soviet Yak 3 in combat with Luftwaffe fighters. The Soviet Air Force in WW2 has hardly been depicted by most aviation artists and Robert Taylor only produced this release. The Air War on the Eastern Front was a colossal and costly campaign in which literally tens of thousands of aircraft and pilots were lost by both sides. Initially the Russians fielded a variety of obsolete aircraft against the Luftwaffe - with horrific results. Losses were heavy and the Luftwaffe maintained air supremacy for some time.

By 1943 however, the Soviets were fielding fighters of a different calibre - the Lavotchkin La5N and the Yak 3 were both more than a match for the Luftwaffe's Me109's and Fw190's. Soviet pilots began to rack up impressive victory totals - indeed the top Allied 'Ace' of the war was Ivan Kozhedub with over 60 victories. The top Yak ace was Major Arsenii Vorozheikin, who scored an amazing 52 Victories in various Yak fighters.

Another high profile Unit that flew the Yak 3 was the 'Normandie-Niemen' Squadron of French pilots, who flew with the Russians until the end of WW2.
