SIGNED Battle Of Britain FIRST DAY COVER - OBERLEUTNANT EBERHARD WILDERMUTH - 8./KG51
Oberleutnant Eberhard Wildermuth flew with the 8./KG51 flying the Junkers Ju88A bomber. He was part of the Luftwaffe force despatched on 12th August 1940 to attack targets along the South coast of England, with Portsmouth being his specific target. Other Ju88's of KG51 also bombed the Radar Station at Ventnor on the Isle of Wight, which naturally stirred up a hornets nest of RAF defending fighters.
Wildermuth's Ju88A was flying over Portsmouth Harbour when the entire tail section was shot off by a direct hit from AA Fire. The Junkers broke up in mid air as it fell, with Wildermuth and two other crew managing to exit the aircraft with difficulty. The remaining crew member is still 'missing'.
Wildermuth's aircraft was Ju88A-1 coded '9K+BS'. Incredibly, parts of this aircraft have been salvaged and are now on display at the Tangmere Aviation Museum!!
A totally unique cover!
