WOLF-DIETER HUY - KNIGHTS CROSS WITH OAK LEAVES - Signed Photo

Huy scored his first victory over Dunkirk in 1940 - a Spitfire - before transferring to 7./JG77. In 1941 his Staffel were heavily involved in the operations in the med theatre - the invasion of Greece and the air operations at Crete. It was during these actions that Huy flew 'Jabo' or 'fighter-bomber' sorties, his Bf109F carried a bomb on the centreline and he became adept at hunting the shipping off the coasts. He damaged the Cruiser HMS Fiji and also led an attack on HMS Warspite where two of his polits damaged the warship.

After this JG77 was transferred to Russia for 'Operation Barbarossa' where Huy showed his skill in traditional fighter combat - by March 1942 he had amassed 38 victories before being wounded by Flak.

In October 1942 Huy, still leading the 7th Staffel JG77 were transferred to North Africa to help bolster Luftwaffe strength in the aftermath of El Alamein. On 28th October Huy claimed a Spitfire near El Alamein but, the following day, was shot down by a Spitfire of 601 Squadron. Huy was taken prisoner and spent the remainder of the war as a POW.

Huy claimed 40 victories during WW2. He died in 2003.
