WALTER WOLFRUM - KNIGHTS CROSS - Signed Photo

Walter Wolfrum began his career in February 1943 when he joined 5./JG52 in the Crimea, under the command of the famed 'Macky' Steinhoff. JG52 was heavily involved in the fighting around the Kuban bridgehead and Wolfrum scored his first victory here. By April 1944 Wolfrum achieved his 70th victory, although wounded in the encounter.

On his return he took command of 1st Staffel and shortly after claimed a staggering 11 victories in one day in Romania. His Staffel also combatted the Bombing raids by US aircraft on the oilfields.

As the Soviet VVS now began to swamp the Luftwaffe with amazing numbers of aircraft, the Pilots of JG52 were fighting for their lives. On 16th July 1944 Wolfrum flew four sorties and claimed 11 victories but was hit by a 37mm shell from a Soviet P-39 Airacobra that passed through his stomach and hit his pelvis. He was hospitalised for 6 months.

He returned to duty in February 1945 and by wars end had amassed 137 victories. Although handed over to the Soviets his severe wounds meant he was released in June 1945.
