SS-Sturmann Zvonimir Bernwald served with the 13 Waffen-Gebirgs-Division der SS 'Handshar'. Bernwald was a Yugoslav national who volunteered for service in the Waffen SS. He spent most of the war with the 13. Waffen-Gebirgs-Division (1st Croatian) fighting a counter-partisan war against Tito's forces in Yugoslavia.
After the war he wrote his memoirs 'For the Defence of my nation - Bosnians in the Waffen SS' and 'A Muslim in the Waffen SS'.
Bernwald died in 2009
