HUIE H. LAMB junior - US PILOT 78th FG - Signed Card
Huie Lamb joined the 82nd Fighter Squadron of the 78th Fighter Group in 1944. Initially flying the P-47 Thunderbolt, Lamb scored his first victory on 12 October 1944 when he shot down an Me109G in the Hamburg area.
Three days later on 15 October, Lamb was strafing ground targets in the Osnabruck area when, while returning to base he spotted a 'jet aircraft' which he identified as an 'Me262'. Giving his P-47 full power he caught up with the stratled jet pilot and opened fire, observing strikes as the jet tried to lead him over airfield Flak defences. Lamb continued to fire until the Me262 rolled over and crashed. The Me262 was a bomber variant of I/KG(J)51 'Edelweiss' piloted by Fw Edgar Junghans, who died from his injuries.
In December 1944 the entire 78th FG converted from the P-47 to the P-51D Mustang and flew their first mission on 29 December. Lamb had the misfortune of having to ditch in the English Channel as he had engine failure after a Mission to Frankfurt. He was successfully picked up by a Fleet Air Arm Walrus amphibian!
Lamb was soon back in action and on 19th March 1945 the entire 78th FG became embroiled in a huge dogfight with a large number of enemy fighters. Lamb engaged an Me109G and observed hits, but could only claim a 'damaged'. He and his wing Leader then spotted an Arado 234 Jet and engaged that also, Lamb finishing the Arado off to claim a 'half' share. Now heading home to Duxford they encountered yet more Luftwaffe aircraft in the shape of 4 Fw190's, which Lamb managed to damage one of them.
Huie Lamb completed 61 missions with the 78th FG and is credited with 2.5 victories (Me109G/Me262 and a half Ar234)
This is a very nice signed card.
