FRITZ TEGTMEIER - KNIGHTS CROSS - Signed Photo

Fritz Tegtmeier joined 2nd Staffel JG54 in October 1940 flying the Me109E where, the following month, he suffered severe injuries after he crash landed his Messerschmitt at Jever airfield. Upon recovery Tegtmeier managed to rejoin his Unit just in time to take part in 'Operation Barbarossa' on 22nd June 1941, where he scored his first victory.

He moved to 1st Staffel and by the end of 1942 had 24 victories to his credit. By May 1943 this had increased to 53 victories and this resulted in him being posted to Ergansungs Jagdgruppe Ost as a fighter pilot instructor. Following this he returned to the front line as Staffelkapitan of 3./JG54 and claimed his 100th victory in May 1944.

In March of 1945 he was tranferred to JG7 to fly the Me262 jet fighter. Tegtmeier finished with war with 146 victories.

He died in 1999 aged 81.
