BURGHARDT VON SALDERN-WILSNACK - KNIGHTS CROSS - Signed Note
Burghardt von Saldern-Wilsnack joined the German Army in 1936 as an Officer candidate and was part of the 51st PanzerGrenadier Regiment (motorised). He saw action during the Polish campaign and then the Battle for France, earning the Iron Cross 1st and 2nd Class. The Regiment subsequently saw intense combat on the Eastern Front, including the seige of Leningrad and the battles for Staraya Russa and Smolensk. He was awarded the Knights Cross in May 1944 for his actions in the defensive battle for Krasnitza.
His Regiment became embroiled in the disaster of Operation Bagration in June 1944 with the collapse of Army Group 'Centre' in which he was captured by the Soviets. He did not return to Germany until 1954.
This is a very nice typed and signed note dated 1989.
