DAY OF THE FIGHTERS by Nicolas Trudgian
Multi-Signed Remarque Edition
One of Nick's Classic Fighter Series released way back in 1994, 'Day Of The Fighters' depicts one of the greatest Fighter aircraft of WW2 and arguably the best Luftwaffe fighter of the war - the Fw190.
Built to an entirely different design philosophy than it's stablemate - the Bf109 - Kurt Tank's compact, tough, radial-engine fighter could take tremendous punishment - it's air-cooled engine being much more resilient to combat damage than it's liquid-cooled rivals. In addition, the Fw190A could also carrying heavy armament - FOUR 20mm cannon - making it the ideal Bomber interceptor.
So adaptable was the airframe that it was used extensively in the ground-attack role - the F series seeing widesprread action in Russia, where it proved it's worth. With the Bombs released, the Fw190F could actually take on Soviet fighters.
Nicolas Trudgian chosse to portray the Fw190A's of JG1 with their distinctive Black & White' chequerboard noses returning from a day of heavy combat. It is the 17th August 1943 and the US 8th Air Force has struck at Schweinfurt, the B-17 bombers coming under incessant and furies attack by Luftwaffe fighters. The Fw190A's of JG1 head back to base over a typical Dutch landscape where a B-17 has made an emergency landing after suffering battle damage.
