FDC 54 SQUADRON - SIGNED BY SIR THOMAS SOPWITH
One of the greatest names in British aviation History, Sir Thomas Sopwith taught himself to fly during the very early years of flight. He created his Sopwith Aviation Company in 1912 and produced the most famous series of World War One fighters for the RFC.
The Sopworth Pup and Triplane were both successful designs but the Camel became THE British fighter of the 'Great War' and Sopwith produced 5747 of the aircraft.
He later became Chairman of the Hawker Aircraft Company and continued to work in aviation circles. He died in 1989 at the age of 101.
