Ivelaw-Chapman joined the RFC in 1917 before joining 10 Squadron flying RE8 in January 1918. He was actually airborne on 11th November 1918 at 1100hrs when the ceasefire came into effect.
After the war he saw service in India and elsewhere in the British territories. At the outbreak of WW2 he was Station Commander at Linton-on-ouse No 4 Group Bomber Command. He flew his only WW2 sortie in May 1944 but was shot down over France, evading capture for 5 weeks before being arrested by the Gestapo.
Post war he was the Vice President of the RAF Escaping Society.
