NO TURNING BACK By Robert Taylor The Bomber Command Edition
This classic Robert Taylor release pays tribute to the courage and determination of the crews of Bomber Command that flew the longest and most bitter campaign of any British Service in WW2. The odds were daunting and the losses heavy but many were awarded the highest decoration for valour - The Victoria Cross.
On 3rd November 1943 a 61 Squadron Lancaster piloted by Flight Lieutenant Bill Reid took off to attack Dusseldorf and had only just crossed the Dutch coast when an Me110 night fighter locked onto their aircraft, it's cannon fire causing damage to the windscreen and elevator, making the Lancaster difficult to handle. Reid, although wounded, ascertained that his crew were all OK and decided to continue to the target over an hour away.
Shortly before the target Reid's Lancaster became the hunted once more - a single 'Wilde Sau' or 'Wild Boar' Fw190 fighter made a firing pass and raked the Lancaster causing more damage and killing the Navigator. Reid was wounded again. Pressing on he dropped his bombs right on target - now Reid steered the Lancaster towards home - attracting Flak over the Dutch coast and with Reid lapsing in and out of conciousness. Reid took control and wrestled the aircraft down through a runway partially obscured by fog, a damaged undercarriage leg collapsing on landing. For this astounding effort William 'Bill' Reid was awarded the Victoria Cross.
Robert's amazing painting sets the scene as Reid's Lancaster is attacked by a 'Wild Boar' Fw190 high over the blazing target - a tribute to the courage and skill of all of those who fight in the night skies over Europe.
