RETURN OF THE HUNTERS BY Nicolas Trudgian

Triple Remarque and Multi-Signed.

As the tide of war turned against Germany the Luftwaffe hurried to deploy more advance fighter aircraft to counter the ever increasing threat posed by the Allies. In the West the US 8th Air Force could despatch thousands of Bombers and Fighters to pound industrial targets in Germany. The new 'Jet' technology was rushed into action by a desparate Luftwaffe high command. Of all the Jet aircraft used operationally one is the most famous - the Messerschmitt Me262.

With it's 'shark-like' appearance, a battery of 30mm cannon and sparkling 540mph performance, the Me262 was a design that caused Allied commanders concern. The reality was more balanced - the Jumo 004 turbojets proved to be difficult and unreliable, fuel was in short supply and the delays forced on the introduction of the jet as a Fighter meant that it wasn't until late 1944 that the Me262 flew in significant numbers against Allied raids. The most famous Me262 Unit was undoubtedly 'JV44' formed by the great 'Ace' Adolf Galland but the Unit that battled the longest against the Allies was 'JG7', who included many great Luftwaffe Aces. Theo Weissenberger, Erich Rudorffer and many others flew the Jet until the war was over. Several became Jet 'Aces' and Nicolas Trudgian's 'Return of The Hunters' depicts the Me262's of Stab/JG7 returning to base after another tussle with the US 'heavies'. The jets are equipped with a pair of WGr 21cm rockets to break up the formations of heavy bombers. Below, in the snow, a B-26 Marauder has crash-landed as the Me262's head for home - and possibly another sortie!
