TALE OF A GUINEA PIG By Wing Commander Geoffrey Page
The classic autobiography of one of the RAF's most distinguished Pilots - Page fought in the Battle of Britain flying the Hurricane with 56 Squadron, where he scored several victories. On 12th August 1940 Page and his Squadron engaged a formation of Dorner Do17Z bombers, whose return fire set Page's Hurricane ablaze. In agony he managed to kick himself free of his burning Hurricane and was rescued from the Channel, albeit with dreadful burns.
Page was treated by the famous plastic surgeon Sir Archibald McIndoe and thus became part of the select 'Guinea Pig' Club. He later rejoined the fight leading 132 Squadron over Normandy.
