THE DEBDEN EAGLES - ORIGINAL PENCIL DRAWING BY NICOLAS TRUDGIAN
A TRIBUTE TO DON GENTILE AND JOHN GODFREY - SIGNED BY DON BLAKESLEE
The 4th Fighter Group was one of the most famous 8th Air Force fighter Units. Initially flying the massive P-47 Thunderbolt, it converted to the P-51B Mustang in February 1944. It had also just received a new Commanding Officer in the shape of Don Blakeslee, whose aggressive style of leadership infused the pilots with a desire to prove themselves in combat.
One pilot in particular took to the new qualities of the P-51B immediately - Don Gentile. On 4th March 1944 the 4th Fighter Group became the first 8th AF Unit to escort Bombers all the way to Berlin. During the wild dogfights Gentile teamed up with John Godfrey as a wingman and the pair subsequently became a legendary Team in fighting the Luftwaffe. Between 3rd March and 8th April 1944 Gentile scored no less than 15.5 victories.
Nicolas Trudgian's superb Drawing shows Gentile's P-51B 'Shangri-La' accompanied by John Godfrey's P-51B heading home after yet another tussle with Luftwaffe Fighters.
The Drawing is A3 Size and is signed by the famed CO of the 4th FG:-
COLONEL DON BLAKESLEE
