THE ROAD TO THE RHINE By Robert Taylor

SPECIAL MULTI-SIGNED DOUBLE REMARQUE SET

On Sunday 17th September 1944, C-47 Dakotas dropped thousands of paratroopers from the US 101st and 82nd Airborne Divisions into Holland, 150 miles behind enemy lines - the Mission to seize a series of bridges and hold them until the arrival of Allied armour. If successful, it could lead to the swift end of the war in Rurope as, once across the Rhine river, Allied forces could swing into the industrial heart of Germany - the Ruhr.

For the men of the 101st Airborne - the 'Screaming Eagles' - their task was to seize the bridges at Eindhoven. The 82nd Airborne would do the same at Nijmegan and the British 1st Airborne would capture the furthest objective - the brdige at Arnhem. On the 17th September 1944 the plan - 'Operation Market Garden' was put into action.

The 101st Airborne quickly captured all of their objectives but the plan went awry at Arnhem where, despite taking the bridge, 1st Airborne realised that they were facing extremely strong enemy Units - elements of TWO SS Panzer Divisions. Although the two US Divisions held until relieved, the British at Arnhem were overwhelmed.

Robert Taylor's superb release 'The Road To The Rhine' depicts the scene on Sunday 17th September 1944 as C-47 Dakota of the 439th Triip Carrier Group drop the US 101st and 82Nd Airborne Divisions into Holland to begin 'Operation Market Garden'. This was originally released to commemorate the 65th Anniversary of D-Day.
