THE STORM CLOUDS GATHER by Nicolas Trudgian
SPECIAL MULTI-SIGNED REMARQUE
During the crucial months of August and September 1940 the Battle of Britain raged in the slies over southern England. RAF Fighter Command came under increasing pressure from the Luftwaffe as the Battle moved towards it's climax.
The main task of the Luftwaffe Fighter Units was to protect the vulnerable German Bombers from attack - the Heinkel He111's, Junkers Ju88's and Dornier Do17's were slow and only protected by a few machine guns. It was thus the job of the Messerschmitt Me109E escorts to break up the attacks from RAF Spitfires and Hurricanes.
Many famous Units flew during the Battle but none were as famous as JG2 'Richthofen'. Among it's number would emerge the top-scoring 'Ace' of the Battle - Helmut Wick - with 56 victories.
Also among it's ranks were future 'experten' - Erich Rudorffer and Gunther Seeger.
Nick Trudgian's 2000 release 'The Storm Clouds gather' features the highly distinctive Me109E of Helmut Wick - with his wingman Gunther Seeger - leading the Messerschmitts of JG2 'Richthofen' out on yet another mission in September 1940. In the background He111's are heading towards the English coast and Wick will fly escort for the force. Meanwhile, a Bristol Belnheim of 2 Group lies force-landed on the beach paying testimony to Bomber Command's contribution to the battle.
