UNDER THE RADAR By Nicolas Trudgian

Print No1 of the Battle of Britain 80th Anniversary Trilogy

On the 15th August 1940, the Luftwaffe launched it's largest ever attack on Britain to date, with over 2000 sorties. The raiders appeared large and threatening on the RAF's radar screens, but unseen were the sixteen Bf110's and the nine Me109E's of the 'Special Test Group' 'ErprobungsGruppe 210'. Their tactic was to fly so low as to not be seen by radar and this days traget was RAF Martlesham Heath in Suffolk.

Led by the Bf110D's with the blue and white markings of 1st Staffel, the Gruppe also boasted 30mm cannon-armed Bf110C's and bomb-carrying Me109E's from the 3rd Staffel. The tranquility of East Anglian backwaters was shattered but the real damage was done at Martlesham, where the RAF had no time to react.

Erp.210 served successfully throughout the Battle of Britain but, thankfully for the RAF, it remained a small part of Luftwaffe tactics.

The Print measures an impressive 35 x 25.5 Inches
