HAUPTMANN WINFRIED SCHMIDT - Knights Cross
Schmitt served with JG77 at the outbreak of war and scored his first victory over a Wellington bomber on 18 December 1939. He moved to JG3 and served with that Unit during the Battle of Britain.
In June 1941 he transferred to Russia for Operation Barbarossa and claimed several victories. However, his career was cut short when he was badly wounded by return fire from Soviet bombers - suffering from severe blood loss and in danger of losing conciousness he was only saved by the assitance given to him by his wingman, future Ace Wilhelm Lemke - who talked Schmidt home.
His wounds were so severe that he was given only staff positions until wars end.
